The Scene
Step through the art-nouveau arches into a faux Parisian bakery. Glass-covered cases are lined with rows of pastries, glass jars on shelves are stuffed with brightly colored candy and beaded chandeliers add sparkle to the already gleaming space. Patrons of all ages come to sip tea, read the paper and linger in the leather-covered banquettes or at the bistro tables outside.
The Food
French pastries and sweets are made with buttery authenticity. Croissants crackle at the crisp ends, only to blossom into puffs of delicate pastry. Either plain with jam or with added fruit, like the tangy pear tart, they go perfectly with a cup of coffee. For lunch, try the earthy and robust prosciutto panini sandwich stuffed with homemade mozzarella or the semisweet Brie and pear panini. On the way home, fill a box with apricot-raspberry shortbread cookies and chocolate-covered almond chews.
