The Scene
High ceilings and exposed brick walls plastered with black-and-white photos of literary heroes lend this coffeehouse an airy, industrial look. Lunch draws a chatty business crowd, while off-peak hours are the domain of solo scribes sipping coffee and tapping away on laptops.

The Food
Besides fueling the novel-writing masses with their daily caffeine fixes, the raison d'être here is healthy eating. Most lunch dishes are sided by faintly dressed organic greens, and at breakfast, artery-clogging extras such as hash browns and bacon are only available by request. Traditionally rich dishes, like an underseasoned eggs Florentine, lack verve, so stick to the waistline-friendly sandwiches and salads. The Turkey Asparagus Affair wraps tender turkey slices around blanched asparagus spears on a robust, crusty bread. The Caprese salad, usually a delicate affair, is more of a meal, with big slabs of fresh mozzarella and thick chunks of tomatoes on mixed greens.
