The Scene
This jewel box spot in Zax's old space is owned by two cordial former Toscana waiters and Rome-trained chef Raffaele Sabatini. Red velvet curtains frame a charming interior anchored by a ceiling-high wine rack, chandeliers of thick candles, and dark, Mission-style chairs. The mature, well-dressed clientele packing the room shows how quickly local foodies discover a new spot serving up extraordinary cooking. Service is effusive and attentive, with the waiters willing to help with Italian pronunciation or share insights on specials.
The Food
Unusual central Italian selections dot an enticing menu. A beautiful, aromatic baked onion appetizer is stuffed with juicy eggplant, pine nuts and raisins. Wild salmon in an olive oil lemon glaze is moist yet flaky, and incredibly flavorful. Miniature ear-shaped orecchiette pasta seasoned with golden flakes of dried sheep's milk cheese offers exquisite texture. For dessert, pear au gratin is a warm, almond-y casserole with a delicate crust.
