The Scene
On a dark side street in Hollywood, the sign nearly hidden by creeping ivy, Café des Artistes buzzes in a lovely old house. Warm melon walls, hardwood floors and French posters and trinkets beckon couples inside, while groups cluster on the lush, lofty back patio.
The Food
Chef Jean-Pierre Bosc's cuisine is refreshingly uncomplicated--no plates swirled with sauce or frustrating fusion here. Rich, garlicky New Zealand mussels and spicy merguez sausages with cumin dip are equally winning starters; the entree of duck confit is rich and earthy in a gratin of flageolets. The hanger steak in red wine-shallot sauce is simply delicious--tender, sweet and accompanied by hot, crisp frites. For dessert, order a pot of the decadent, creamy chocolate mousse.
