The Scene
The magnificent 1930's Union Station dramatically melds Mission, Art Deco and modern styles into a grand historic landmark. Polished marble floors gleam beneath massive chandeliers in the grand concourse, where the restaurant's outer velvet-roped tables perch for engaging people-watching. The elegant, formal inner dining room is intimate, if not slightly claustrophobic; but the airy back patio courtyard with fountains is cool under massive jacarandas.
The Food
Chef/owner Tara Thomas brings an haute New American menu to life with deft regional flourishes. Venison carpaccio is silky tender, melting on the tongue. The jumbo Louisiana crab cake breaks open to reveal succulent, sweet lumps of crabmeat; Prince Edward Island mussels arrive steaming in a spicy tomato saffron broth that really kicks. Roasted chicken frolics in a complex, authentic green chile stew. The standout is a stunning hunk of wild Virginia striped bass, where pure notes of delicate fish are subtly complemented by caramelized and fresh shaved fennel.
Hits: The gorgeous 30's architecture and dreamy railway romance make this dining venue wonderfully unique in LA, plus the food's terrific.
Misses: The outer concourse tables and back patio (part of the outdoor waiting area) can sometimes jar an haute dining experience with boisterous Union Station denizens, riders, or smokers.
