Hip Silver Lake neighborhood restaurant cooks up ''Chicano cuisine'' and great drink prices.

The Scene
Black tile and flocked, red wallpaper create a minimalist but hipster-friendly vibe that the former Cobalt Cantina could never capture. No longer predominantly gay, straight Eastsiders on first dates and oversized birthday parties comprise an equal percentage of the clientele. Service is competent, but it's surprisingly difficult to get extra dishes or silverware for sharing.

The Food
A pan-Latin menu finds success with the basics, but often overestimates the kitchen's expertise. Made-to-order tortilla chips are softer than most, and come with a choice of salsas: Mild tomatillo and avocado for spice-sensitive diners, or burnt habanero and crème fraiche dip for the more adventurous. Shredded chicken enchiladas immersed in tangy, sweet red sauce, and broiled lobster tail bathed in garlic butter, are standout entrees. However, the intricate flavors of the signature ground beef, potato and pickle taco get lost in a greasy, deep-fried shell.

Recently awarded best ‘Chips and Salsa' in Ciudad magazine and as ‘one of the best places to taste tequila' in Los Angeles by Sunset magazine. Malo is the Silver Lake home to over 150 different tequilas; all of them 100% blue agave; add our daily house made sweet and sour for a margarita or hit one of the fresh fruit infused tequilas that line the bar. Malo is a Los Angeles favorite for not only the margaritas and mojitos in the bar, but also the food. "This hip but casual restaurant offers a new take on Mexican food by intertwining a gourmet aesthetic with home style favorites served with sturdy margaritas." The Ground Beef & Pickle tacos have been written up nationally as one of the best tacos in Los Angeles and the Burnt Habanero & Crema salsa is a local favorite. Fish tacos, Oaxacan shrimp and the Lobster Diablo are our current favorites from the sea and the Carne Asada and Pork Al Pastor rule the land.
